The dancing scene quickly turns ridiculous, which can be enjoyable or pull you too far away from the medieval scene. The first time I saw A Knight's Tale on cable, missed it in theater , I had the same reaction as many of you - Queen? William would have probably faced death and not just the stocks for pretending to be a noble, and the amount of tournaments should have been enough for others to discover his faulty lineage especially as he became the premier competitor fairly quickly and out of nowhere. With his newly-minted history in hand, the young man sets out to prove himself a worthy knight at the country's jousting competition, and finds romance along the way. After you get past the first one or two scenes, everything really grows on you.
A Knight's Tale was nothing like either of those. With his newly-minted history in hand, the young man sets out to prove himself a worthy knight at the country's jousting competition, and finds romance along the way. Chronologically, historically and geographically incorrect. After his master dies suddenly, the squire hits the road with his cohorts Roland and Wat. It really shouldn't but it does work! The character of Jocelyn is full of historical flaws. The combination of modern music to medieval setting should be awful, but no, it works! But I stayed with it, and I'm glad I did. The Bad While the attitudes of the commoners were fairly accurate, the language was a jarring mix of old and new. None of the jousting scenes were too long like, say, the race in Phantom Menace. Although only nobles are allowed in tournaments, William is now inspired to compet e and win more prizes.
Medieval fashion was drab at times but also had periods of crazy and wild fashion that could have been utilized. The actors were obviously enjoying themselves, and the action was beautifully blended in with the rest of the film. Finally, the plot of the movie, though making for a good story, is hard to accept in any historical setting. The outfits of Jocelyn are quite bizarre, and even those not familiar with medieval fashion must have noticed the various ones throughout the film. The Ugly Even when accounting for how the director attempted to modernize the middle ages there are some downright ugly representations in the movie. On the journey, they stumble across an unknown writer, Chaucer.
Of course, that was when I had gone in expecting a film like Braveheart or The Patriot, with real historical lessons. So I say that, for those of you who cannot enjoy a piece of entertainment due to its well placed use of anachronisms, I strongly suggest you stay away from any of Shakespeare's works. I laughed from beginning to end and was enraptured by the sense of friendship that these people displayed. Movie Title: A Knight's Tale Director: Brian Helgeland Stars: Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany Release Date: 11 May 2001 Genres: Action, Adventure, Romance Format: File Size: 1. The humor is, yes, cheesy at times, the Nike armor but I still laughed. I tell you what I can say, I thoroughly enjoyed it!!! On their way to a tournament, they meet Geoffrey Chaucer, a poor writer who joins the group.
One of the battles that count Adhemar is involved in when he is pulled away from the tournaments is the battle of Poitiers, involving the Black Prince, but decades before the events in the movie. Storyline: After his master dies, a peasant squire, fueled by his desire for food and glory, creates a new identity for himself as a knight. Kudos to anyone who recognizes Laura Fraser the blacksmith from Man in the Iron Mask.
This movie was designed to entertain. I only wish we could all be like them! What more can I say? Destitute, William wears Ector's armor to impersonate him, win the tournament, and secure the prize. This is not at saying that I do not enjoy the plot or the movie. And I have to laud Paul Bettany who was an incredible and incredibly amusing Geoffrey Chaucer. Not to say that this movie was on level with Shakespeare. Destitute, William wears Ector's armour to impersonate him, winning the tournament and taking the prize.
In 14th century Europe, squires William Thatcher, Roland, and Wat, discover their master, Sir Ector, has died with one final pass to complete to win a jousting tournament. Jones' book made use of extensive research into medieval history, and Helgeland's film obviously does, too. Once you get past the glaring anachronisms put in the film on purpose, of course , you find the movie is actually quite true to its period. If he had completed one final pass he would have won the tournament. Chaucer was a master of satire in his day. He wins the fight and decides to, together with his fellow squires Wat and Roland, take on a new false identity as a knight and make a living winning tournaments. This comment is to counter those who have issue with modern rock and other time problems being in this movie.
At the tournament, William is brought before Simon the Summoner and Peter the Pardoner. Not the best film of its kind, but a head above most. I went in expecting little and came out extremely satisfied. Given this date, a lot of aspects are borrowed from earlier or later periods. The quartet then keep traveling through England and France, fighting in tournaments. Chaucer has a gambling problem and is in their debt, but William orders him released and promises payment. Knowing the truth and fallacies in the film, it is an all-around enjoyable experience.
